Another core value of Marriott International is to serve our world. One day during every Associate Appreciation Week is dedicated to giving back to the communities where we live and work. We do so by venturing out of the office and off property to participate in community service. Our activities vary from writing cards to gardening, but one thing is constant—the feeling of joy everyone has when they serve others.
Countless properties participated in Spirit to Serve our Communities Day but we have some great examples from the Renaissance Seattle Hotel, owned and managed by R.C. Hedreen, Co., The St. Regis Bangkok, The Westin Cape Town, and La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort, owned by International Hospitality Associates S. en C. Por A. (S.E.) and managed by IHE International Enterprises, Inc. Their activities included sorting and packaging food at the Pike Market Food Bank, making exercise equipment from elastic bands for local hospitals, cleaning the popular Signal Hill hiking trail in Cape Town, and holding a food drive for cats and dogs at the Huellitas de Amor shelter in Puerto Rico.
The Four Points by Sheraton Miraflores, owned and managed by Top Rank Publicidad, SRLtda, showed us how service for others starts in the hotel by rewarding an associate from the laundry department who returned a found belonging in the pocket of a guest’s shirt. The team then moved off property to raise money for the Aniquem Organization. Proceeds helped create special bandages that help the healing process of burns and wounds for 20 children.
Many other hotels participated in service that helped children, such as the Courtyard by Marriott Toronto Downtown and CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa. The former helped bring happiness to children in the SickKids Foundation—an organization that funds research, learning, and care throughout Canada—while the latter included a guest in their visit to a children’s shelter. A guest was staying at the CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa hotel for a friend’s wedding when he expressed interest in doing service work at a local shelter. It was perfect timing and he was able to join the group in bringing food to the children and playing games with them.
There are countless ways to serve our world and we are grateful that our spirit to serve exists beyond Associate Appreciation Week.
