Welcome to Checking In, our feature that spotlights fascinating associates across the company and globe. Today, Heart of the House checks in with three “marshmologists” at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. The marshmallow artists are Pastry Chef Daniella R., Administrative Assistant Daniel M. and Rooms Supervisor Kristen A.

HOTH: Please describe what you do.
KRISTEN: As “Dr. Mallow,” I perfect the Art of the S’more by hosting “Marshmology” every evening around our backyard fire pit. It’s an interactive activity that engages our guests by explaining how our homemade marshmallows are created. I am known for roasting the “perfect s’more” and always say, the messier the better!

HOTH: How and when was the idea born for a marshmologist?
DANIEL: On August 10, 2012, our Marshmology program was born. It originated from an idea to interact with our guests in a fun environment. S’mores have always been a favorite of the great outdoors, and given that we are in the mountains, it was a no brainer that it would be a hit.

HOTH: What flavors do you offer?
DANIELLA: They change all the time depending on the season and what we feel would taste great on a graham cracker with chocolate. Right now, we have candied bacon marshmallows, peppermint marshmallows and strawberry banana marshmallows.

HOTH: How do you come up with the flavors?
DANIEL: We cater to the seasons and the holiday, as well as jump outside the box to try different flavors and combinations.

HOTH: What are the most popular flavors? What’s your personal favorite?
DANIELLA: They are all popular, but my personal favorite is the banana vanilla marshmallow with a s’more. On its own, my favorite marshmallow is the root beer float flavor.

HOTH: Who gets more excited about the s’mores, kids or adults?
KRISTEN: Our “big kids” (the adults) love it! They are excited to go back to their childhood campfire days and explore our flavors. The parents enjoy the homemade flavors and are more adventurous, but the kids love the offerings just as much. The kids’ favorite always seems to be our bubblegum flavor. They always ask if they can blow a bubble with the marshmallow!

HOTH: What is your favorite part of your job?
KRISTEN: My favorite part of being Dr. Mallow is getting to know our guests around the fire pit. One of my favorite “WOW” factors of the job is surprising a little boy or girl and asking them to be “Marshmologist of the Day.” We give them a nametag and chef’s hat, and after a quick training they go home with a Marshmology 101 certificate!
