Cooking Up a Wish

The Ritz-Carlton, Bangalore

There was a special guest chef scheduled to visit The Ritz-Carlton, Bangalore. Ladies and gentlemen stood waiting and provided a resounding applause for the guest as he walked in. As he barely overcame his surprise, a tumbling cascade of fresh rose petals came raining from above as he looked up to see his photograph featured on the television in the lobby. Clutching his mother’s hand, the little boy walked in…a little unsure and a bit surprised. This was the opening scene from the child’s day of impending dreams.

In collaboration with Make-A-Wish Foundation and The Ritz-Carlton’s Community Footprints program, Training Manager Saloni Mehta set about curating a day full of surprises for this little boy who is grappling with a terminal illness. His wish was simple—he wanted to be a chef and bake a cake. That was exactly what he was going to get.

Upon arrival, he was presented with a small chef uniform, made exactly to size by the Laundry Manager Jeya and Uniform Room Tailor Mahadev. After changing into his chef whites, he was ushered into the restaurant and met with Chef Lakshmi and Chef Basu from the Pastry Team who helped calm his nerves. Together, they piped icing onto cupcakes, and rolled out little balls of chocolate. Meanwhile, onlookers stood around applauding, encouraging, and taking pictures of this little Celebrity Chef, who was clearly enjoying all the attention.

Later he was presented with a certificate that labeled him a certified baker (he promised to show this off to his doctor). He was also treated to buffet lunch and later posed for pictures with the team of chefs—who were just as excited as the young boy.

Fulfilling dreams is all in a day’s work for the The Ritz-Carlton, Bangalore, team, and the lasting memories were the perfect reward.
