Something as simple as soap can be a lifesaver. Last year, Clean the World Foundation, Inc. (CTW), along with the now-retired Starwood Foundation, provided a comprehensive hygiene education program for roughly 8000 children in rural Kenya and Tanzania. CTW’s ongoing aim is to distribute soaps and teach communities about the often lifesaving importance of hand washing. Thanks to this support there has been a 56% decrease in hygiene related illnesses and a 45% increase in school attendance in the participating Kenyan schools, and a 38% decrease in diarrheal diseases and a 31% increase in school attendance in the Tanzanian schools. A number of Marriott and legacy Starwood properties around the world have also supported collecting and donating partially-used soap to Clean the World for over 5 years.
