In February, associates from The Westin Golf Resort & Spa, Playa Conchal in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, along with 200 volunteers from the local communities (including associates from the JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa), participated in the national volunteer campaign – “Clean Your Footprint” – with the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE).
Under the coordination of the property’s volunteer program, “Elegí Ayudar” (“Choose to Help” in English), the campaign focuses on the preservation of the marine turtles that nest in the Tempisque Conservation Area each year. The volunteers performed an exhaustive cleaning of the 5 KM of coastline, giving the different species of turtles (e.g., Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Leatherback) unobstructed access to the beach and guaranteeing them a better opportunity for spawning. According to statistics from the Tempisque Conservation Area, it is expected that approximately 8,800 turtles will arrive to the Camaronal beach this year.
And a large number of the branches and wood collected during the clean-up will be donated to and reused by associations of artisans in the area for their hand-made works, thus helping to reduce environmental impacts of waste deposits at local landfills.
This is a great example of how associates across Marriott International work together to help Nurture Our World and Sustain Responsible Operations, integral parts of Marriott’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction.
