Taking Refuge in Toronto

The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto

In support of the United Nations Global Goals, The Ritz-Carlton Community Footprints program launched a Global Goals challenge to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). As part of this effort, dedicated and compassionate Ladies and Gentlemen from The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto activated a new initiative to focus on SDG#10 to reduce inequalities by assisting newcomer refugees to Canada.

The Community Footprints team at the hotel partnered with the Together Project to implement a skills-based training program to help refugees learn more about the hospitality industry, gain job-related skills, and obtain information on potential careers. As a result of this initiative, new refugees were able to develop a professional network to assist them in their career search and goals along the way.

The program was a great success and led to life-changing impact. Within nine months, three of the participants were recruited to join the Ladies and Gentlemen of The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto. In addition, the hotel was honored with the 2017 Humanitarian Award of Excellence, a prestigious award given to those working in Canada’s lodging industry by the Hotel Association of Canada, to recognize the hotel’s dedication and responsiveness to the needs of the local, national, and global community.

Part of Tides Canada – a recognized national leader in social change philanthropy – the Together Project connects government-assisted refugees with Canadians for friendship and settlement support.

This is a great example of how associates across Marriott International work together to help Empower Through Opportunity, an integral part of Marriott’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction.
