Water is the most basic necessity required to sustain life, but nearly 1 billion people in world don’t have access to clean water. As part of Courtyard by Marriott Pune Chakan‘s “Spirit to Serve Our Communities” and “TakeCare” initiatives, they wanted to support their community with a sustainable solution.
After multiple visits to various villages, the team identified Ajivali village in Pune, Maharashtra as the project destination. The villagers did not have access to clean water forcing women and children to fetch water from distant places to fulfill their daily water needs.
To help fix this issue, the Courtyard team worked closely with Atom Solar Private Limited (a company that manufactures renewable energy products) to educate the villagers of Ajivali on the benefits of rainwater harvesting.
As a result of the lesson, the villagers of Ajivali, with the support of Gram Panchayat, created a farm pond of around 200’ long by 150’ wide by 26’ deep. During monsoon season, the farm pond filled up with water and quickly became a viable water source for the community.
To ensure the pond water reaches them and is drinkable, Courtyard by Marriott Pune Chakan, with Atom Solar Private Limited, installed a solar-enabled water pump of 0.5Hp that pumps the reserved water from the farm pond into a network of pipes that already exist to take water to their homes.
This solar revolution has not only helped solve the village’s water issue, but has improved the wellbeing of the Ajivali villagers as water now flows directly to their doorstep. There is no greater reward than the smiles gracing the villagers faces.
